Outstations

One of the key advantages of membership with the Burrard Yacht Club are the many fantastic outstations that are available for your use. The Club owns Clementine up Indian Arm, Ekins in Howe Sound and a leased outstation in Pender Harbour on the Sunshine Coast. We also have outstation slip agreements at Snug Cove on Bowen Island, Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast and Silva Bay on Gabriola Island. Additionally, the Club is always on the lookout for good opportunities to expand its outstation holdings.

Clementine Outstation

The Clementine Creek Outstation is located at the head of Indian Arm sixteen miles from BYC. It is abeam and to the east of the north shore of Croker Island.

The outstation is 8.42 hectares (20.8 acres) and has over 200 metres (660 ft.) of waterfront. There are over 300 metres (1000 ft.) of moorage. A small pavilion is located on the docks at the foot of the ramp. A large deck and pavilion are located ashore. Clementine has trails, barbecues, a huge fire pit, a horseshoe pitch, a beach, two outhouses and level ground for tenting. Near the shore pavilion is a container that houses some tools and other supplies. Your Club key opens the container and some other locks. If you unlock a lock, please ensure you lock it before leaving. Creek water is piped to the docks, but is unfiltered and untreated and therefore unsuitable for filling your water tanks. Black bears are occasional visitors so children and pets should be closely supervised. A large platform is provided for those wishing to tent onshore. Mooring guests are permitted at Clementine (per Outstation regulation 1). A portable fire pump is available on the dock. Please sign the log book.

Ekins Point Outstation

The Ekins Point Outstation is located at the northern most part of Gambier Island where Ramillies and Thornbrough Channels meet. It is twenty-five miles from BYC. The property is approximately 2.64 hectares (6.5 acres) with about 550 meters (1800 ft) of waterfront. Ekins Point light (LL no. 428) serves as a convenient navigation aid and is on the property. This place has an alluring serenity that, once discovered, always seems to promote return visits.

The docks are large enough to accommodate a number of vessels, however, if you plan on staying overnight it is advisable to move to the inside. There you are protected from wash, often brought forth by a tug passing by at 0300. The ramp and pier allow you shore access. On shore you will find a varied terrain that is, for the most part, quite walk-able. Green mossy meadows and cleared areas with picturesque views are all a part of the shore side, there for you to explore. There are, however, steep and dangerous cliffs near the point. Please be careful! Dockside, you will find a lot of space on our four 12 x 30 metre (40 x 100 ft.) docks and one (8 x 200 ft.) dock. The docks support a pavilion, a fire pit and a large charcoal BBQ. On the shore is a container which houses some tools and other supplies.

Your Club key unlocks some locks including a lock box containing keys for the other locks. If you unlock anything, please lock it before leaving. The docks support a pavilion, a fire pit, basketball hoop, volleyball net and a large charcoal BBQ. Mooring guests are permitted at Ekins (per Outstation regulation 1). Tenting at Ekins is permitted but there are no purpose built facilities for it. A portable fire pump is available on the dock. Please sign the log book.

Bird's Eye Cove Outstation

Birds Eye Cove is a protected deep-water anchorage located approximately half way up Sansum Narrows, between Crofton to the north and Cowichan Bay to the south. The cove is well-protected from most weather conditions and seas given its protection from Vancouver Island and Saltspring Island to the east. The community of Maple Bay is a picturesque, residential, seaside village within the Municipality of North Cowichan. Two roads enter Maple Bay but there is no through road, so it is a quiet neighbourhood with little traffic noise and no industrial activity. Maple Bay is described as the area east of Mackenzie Drive and Osborne Bay Road, encompassing Stoney Hill and Genoa Bay. It also includes the area between Arbutus Point and Octopus Point and the waters of Genoa Bay to the south. Maple Bay and Bird’s Eye Cove are surrounded by rolling topography and an incredibly diverse rural landscape of the Cowichan Valley. The area is characterized by picturesque landscapes that reveal themselves around every corner with vistas that are cultivated or forested in the more natural coastal Douglas Fir landscape that is considered to be a valuable, rare and disappearing ecosystem that exists mostly along a narrow strip of the south east shoreline of Vancouver Island. Maple Bay is serviced by regularly scheduled float plane services operated by both Salt Spring Air and Harbour Air Seaplanes. Daily service is available to Saltspring Island, Vancouver International Airport and downtown Vancouver. Convenient float plane service has played a significant part in the growth in the Cowichan Valley as it allows relocation to the area for those able to work remotely while still requiring easy access to Vancouver and more international destinations. The City of Duncan is located approx. 9 km southwest of Maple Bay while the City of Nanaimo is about 53 km north and the City of Victoria is a little farther to the south.
